From April to May 2023, tornado activity in the United States was tracked by the National Weather Service offices. Counts are preliminary until final confirmation.

April 2023 had near-average activity with 162 confirmed tornadoes. The month began very active, with more than 60 tornadoes in the first five days and an outbreak that started on March 31. After that, moist air was less available and tornado activity slowed for a few days. Early on, some outbreaks produced mainly large hail and damaging winds, and many tornadoes were weak. The second half of April saw more scattered to widespread activity, including a moderate outbreak on April 19–20.

May 2023 was below average, with 190 confirmed tornadoes, most of them weak. Activity stayed steady throughout the month with no major outbreaks. It marked the fourth straight May with no violent tornadoes and the second time in three years that there were no EF3 or stronger tornadoes in May.

Overall, April was near average and May was below average. In the spring, tornado activity tends to move northward and westward as the jet stream shifts, bringing more events to the Midwest and Great Plains while the South sees a decline. The Northeast also saw an increased potential for tornadoes during May.
