Guicho
Guicho, also known as Quisquelo or Can Guicho, is a small warren hound from Galicia in north-west Spain. It is a traditional Galician breed found mainly in Ourense and Pontevedra. The breed is recognized by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and by the Xunta de Galicia, but not by the national kennel club, Real Sociedad Canina de España. It is one of four traditional Galician breeds and was officially recognised in April 2001, with national recognition in May 2001. A stud-book is maintained by the Club de Raza do Can Guicho ou Quisquelo.
Guicho dogs are small: females are 30–38 cm tall and weigh 6–8 kg, while males are 34–42 cm tall and weigh 8–10 kg. Their coats can be solid colors from sand to chocolate or liver, or bi-coloured, tri-coloured, or sable. They are used mainly for rabbit hunting in the Galician mountains, and may also hunt fox or help detect wild boar presence.
Before 2001 the breed was nearly extinct. In 2009 it was still considered endangered but slowly improving. A 2024 census in O Deza and Tabeirós – Terra de Montes (Pontevedra) found 309 Guicho, about 2% of breed-identified dogs. In 2025 the breed was listed as being in recovery by the Real Sociedad Canina de España.
