Malea (gastropod)
Malea is a genus of large sea snails in the tun shell family Tonnidae. They are marine gastropods, meaning they are sea-dwelling snails. The genus was named by Valenciennes in 1832, and the type species is Malea latilabris. Throughout its history, scientists have used several other names for these snails (synonyms), including Dolium (Cadium) Link, 1807; Dolium (Malea) Valenciennes, 1832; Malea (Malea) Valenciennes, 1832; Malea (Quimalea) Iredale, 1929; and Tonna (Malea) Valenciennes, 1832.
Malea snails live in warm, tropical seas from the Red Sea across the Indo-Pacific, including the Philippines and parts of Australia (Northern Territory, Queensland, and Western Australia).
