1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (TV program)
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue was an MSNBC TV talk show about U.S. politics. It aired from March 17, 2008, to April 3, 2009, and was hosted by David Shuster. The program was a panel discussion where the host and guests talked about news and trends in American politics. It continued the format of Race for the White House, which had aired in the same time slot earlier in 2008 and was hosted by David Gregory before he became moderator of NBC's Meet the Press.
The show featured a rotating panel, with frequent guests including Eugene Robinson, Michael Smerconish, Richard Wolffe, and Pat Buchanan. Both Race for the White House and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue aired weeknights at 6 PM Eastern on MSNBC. The show began as Race for the White House, focusing on the 2008 presidential campaign, and was also broadcast on Air America Radio, where Rachel Maddow appeared as a panelist.
During the Democratic and Republican conventions, Gregory hosted coverage from Denver (DNC week of Aug 27) and Saint Paul (RNC week of Sept 1) in MSNBC's outdoor studio. After the conventions, the program started including more interviews.
On November 5, 2008, the show was renamed 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. In December 2008, Gregory was named permanent moderator of Meet the Press, and Shuster became the official host of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. On April 2, 2009, Shuster announced he would move to a new co-hosted show with Tamron Hall, starting June 1. The Ed Show with Ed Schultz took over the 6 PM slot on April 6, 2009. The final 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue episode on April 3, 2009 was hosted by Mike Barnicle, a regular MSNBC substitute anchor.
