Grunwald Poznań (sports club)

Grunwald Poznań is a multi-sport club from Poznań, Poland. It was founded on 12 September 1947 by officers of the Poznań garrison. The club began with football, boxing, athletics, shooting and tennis, and over the years has added many other sports.

Today the club has sections for athletics, field hockey, freestyle wrestling, handball, orienteering, shooting, taekwondo and tennis. In the past it also hosted football, boxing, rowing and table tennis. The orienteering section was founded in 1987 and has earned many medals at Polish and international events. Notable athletes include Robert Banach, Dariusz Mikusiński and Janusz Gliszczyński, and coach Tadeusz Rutkowski helped develop several champions. The athletics section has produced numerous Polish and international medals, including Henryk Szost, the Polish marathon record holder with 2:07:39. The club currently trains several professional runners and has a history of Olympians.

The handball and field hockey sections are among the club’s most successful. Field hockey is considered one of Poland’s and Europe’s top teams, while handball was particularly strong in the 1970s and 1980s. The freestyle wrestling section, founded in 1951, has also produced top competitors, including Monika Michalik, an Olympic bronze medalist and European champion.

The tennis section, one of the club’s earliest, was reactivated in 2003 and now has eight courts (two indoors); Magda Linette represented the club as a junior. The women’s tennis team won the Polish championships in 2010 and 2011.
