Society for Endocrinology
Society for Endocrinology is an international membership organisation and registered charity for scientists, clinicians and nurses who work with hormones. It was founded in 1946 and has about 3,000 members. The charity funds health research in the UK and supports education and training in endocrinology. In 2015 it spent around £1.6 million on charitable activities, including almost £1 million for UK health research.
Early history includes John Folley as Secretary and Cliff Emmens as Treasurer, with Lord Zuckerman as Honorary Editor. Zuckerman and colleagues planned the idea in 1937, but World War II delayed it. In 1996 the society created Bioscientifica, a commercial subsidiary to raise funds by providing services to others.
The society publishes official journals and The Endocrinologist, a quarterly magazine, and runs conferences and training events. Its flagship meeting is the annual BES conference, drawing scientists, clinicians, nurses and trainees from around the world.
Headquarters are in Bristol, UK. The chief executive is Kate Sargent and the president is Márta Korbonits. Website: endocrinology.org.
