Gol-e Yakh
Gol-e Yakh, meaning Ice Flower, is the debut solo studio album by Iranian musician Kourosh Yaghmaei. It was released in 1973 in Iran and blends psychedelic pop with rock. Yaghmaei wrote the music and co-wrote the lyrics with Mahdi Akhavan Langeroudi, a poet and his university friend. The title track, “Gol-e Yakh,” is a sad love song about enduring affection through winter and became a huge hit in Iran, selling millions of copies and making Yaghmaei famous. The single was released with “Del Dareh Pir Misheh” in 1973, and other early singles included “Khaar” (1973), “Leila” / “Paeiz” (1974), and “Saraabe Toe” / “Dar Enteha” (1975). The album was originally released by Ahange Rooz and was reissued in 1991 by Caltex, with a U.S. release by Now Again Records in 2012. The song has been sampled by Western artists, notably Nas in 2018’s “Adam and Eve” on Nasir. Gol-e Yakh has also influenced cinema, inspiring a 2005 Iranian film of the same name and appearing in Desiree Akhavan’s 2014 film Appropriate Behavior.
