Arthur Hall was a 19th‑century publisher and writer based in Paternoster Row, London. In 1848 he took over Sharpe's London Magazine from its founder T. B. Sharpe, who had started it in 1845 as a weekly publication. Hall turned it into a monthly magazine and aimed it at a higher‑end audience; the editor was Frank Smedley. From 1849 to 1852 it appeared as the Journal rather than the Magazine. Around this time Hall partnered with George Virtue to form the firm Arthur Hall, Virtue & Co. In the 1850s the company published the Hofland Library, a large collection of Barbara Hofland's children's books.
