George Archibald (jockey)
George William Archibald (1890–1927) was an American jockey who found success around the world. Born in San Francisco, he won the 1911 Kentucky Derby riding Meridian. He then became a top rider in Germany from 1913 to 1916 for Baron Simon Oppenheim’s Schlenderhan stable, taking big races like the German St Leger, the German 2000 Guineas, the Austrian Derby, the German Oaks, and the German Derby. He moved to Spain and won the Gran Premio de Madrid three times (1919–1921). In 1922 he went to England to ride for Clarehaven Stables at Newmarket, where he won the 2000 Guineas Stakes on St Louis and rode in the Epsom Derby for King George VI. Among his other notable mounts were Town Guard and Spike Island. Archibald rode about 180 winners in England, with his best year coming in 1924 when he won 52 races. He died of heart failure on April 5, 1927, in Newmarket, England, at around 37 years old.
