2015 New Democratic Party of Manitoba leadership election
2015 Manitoba NDP leadership election
The Manitoba New Democratic Party held its leadership convention from March 6–8, 2015 in Winnipeg after Premier Greg Selinger faced a cabinet revolt over his leadership. Three candidates competed: incumbent Greg Selinger, Theresa Oswald, and Steve Ashton.
On the first ballot, Theresa Oswald led with 612 votes (36.02%), Steve Ashton had 575 (33.84%), and Greg Selinger received 502 (29.54%). Oswald was eliminated, leaving Selinger and Ashton to contest the second ballot.
On the final ballot, Greg Selinger won with 759 votes (50.93%) to Steve Ashton’s 726 (48.72%), keeping Selinger as party leader.
The race used a traditional delegated convention. Delegates were elected from each electoral district and from affiliated unions to attend the convention and vote. There were about 2,217 delegate spots in total, with up to 1,242 from constituency associations, 691 from unions, and 200 automatic delegates. Unions faced difficulty filling all their slots, reportedly filling about 361 of 691 positions. To run, candidates paid a $2,000 entry fee, and the spending limit was $71,945.55.
