James I. Langtry

James Ian Langtry (2 January 1939 – 8 April 2021) was a British government official and educator. He was the son of Reverend H. J. Langtry and I. M. Langtry (née Eagleson). In 1959 he married Eileen Roberta Beatrice Nesbitt (died 1999). He studied at Coleraine Academical Institution and Queen’s University, Belfast, where he earned a first-class BSc in Physics.

Langtry began his career as an Assistant Master at Bangor Grammar School (1960–1961), then lectured at Belfast College of Technology (1961–1966). He joined the Civil Service as Assistant Director of Examinations/Recruitment at the Civil Service Commission (1966–1970). He then held senior education posts: Principal of the Department of Education and Science (1970–1976) and Assistant Secretary (1976–1982). He rose to Under Secretary (1982–1987) and then Under Secretary in the Department of Health and Social Services (1987–1988). He died on 8 April 2021, aged 82.
