Functional analysis (psychology)

Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

Functional analysis in psychology studies why a behavior happens by looking at how learning processes link stimuli and responses. It focuses on the four-term contingency: a motivating operation (what makes a consequence more or less appealing), the antecedent or trigger, the behavior itself, and the consequence that follows and helps keep the behavior going.

Functional assessment seeks the purpose or function of a behavior. The strongest method is functional analysis, where researchers or clinicians deliberately change antecedents and consequences in controlled settings to see how the behavior responds. This helps show what is maintaining the behavior.

In practice, functional analysis and related consequence analyses are used in some therapies to understand or change behavior. It is common in behavioral therapies like behavioral activation and is also used in Beck’s cognitive therapy. A variation used in dialectical behavior therapy is the behavior chain analysis.

Advantages:
- Observing behavior in real settings can be more reliable than asking people to report it.
- It guides the design of targeted interventions that change triggers or outcomes to reduce problem behavior.
- It is helpful for young or developmentally delayed children who can’t report reasons for their actions.

Disadvantages:
- There is no universal standard method; different approaches can bias results toward certain functions.
- Some reviews show functional assessment isn’t clearly more effective than simpler contingency approaches.
- Much research has focused on children with developmental disabilities, which may limit generalization.

Professional context:
- Organizations like ABCT support behavior analysis in schools, including functional analysis.
- Doctoral-level behavior analysts may belong to APA Division 25 (Behavior Analysis) and pursue related diplomas.
- The World Association for Behavior Analysis certifies clinicians in clinical behavior therapy and behavioral consultation, including functional analysis.
- The UK Society for Behaviour Analysis provides accreditation, professional development, and advocates for evidence-based practice across education, rehabilitation, health care, business, and the community.
