Shirley Manson is a Scottish singer, songwriter, and musician best known as the lead singer of the rock band Garbage. Born on August 26, 1966 in Edinburgh, she has become one of rock’s most recognizable voices, praised for her distinctive deep voice, bold style, and rebellious spirit. The New York Times has called her a “Godmother of Rock.”

Early in her career, Manson sang and played keyboards with Goodbye Mr Mackenzie. She also formed Angelfish before joining Garbage in 1994. Garbage released their self-titled debut in 1995, producing hits such as “Only Happy When It Rains” and “Stupid Girl.” Their follow-up, Version 2.0 (1998), was another big success. The band also recorded the theme song for the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough (1999). Beautiful Garbage appeared in 2001, followed by Bleed Like Me in 2005. After a hiatus, Garbage returned in 2010 and has released several more albums, including Not Your Kind of People (2012), Strange Little Birds (2016), No Gods No Masters (2021), and Let All That We Imagine Be the Light (2025).

Manson has explored acting and other media as well. She appeared on the TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008) as Catherine Weaver and hosted the music podcast The Jump with Shirley Manson (2019–2021). She has also performed with other artists and worked on various side projects.

In her personal life, Manson was married to Eddie Farrell from 1996 to 2003 and later married Billy Bush in 2010. She has lived in both Edinburgh and Los Angeles. She has been open about her struggles with body image, depression, and self-harm in her youth, and she faced a vocal cord cyst that required surgery in 2003. She also underwent hip replacement surgery in 2023 after a stage accident.

Manson is known for her activism and charity work. She has supported AIDS charities through the M•A•C AIDS Fund and contributed to other causes, including pediatric cancer research. She often speaks about feminism and uses her platform to raise awareness and funds for various issues.

Musically, Manson’s influences include Siouxsie Sioux, Patti Smith, Chrissie Hynde, Debbie Harry, and David Bowie. Her enduring voice and fearless approach have made her a lasting influence on many younger artists.
