Frisco shootout
The Frisco shootout happened in Reserve, New Mexico Territory, on December 1–2, 1884. Lawman Elfego Baca arrested Charlie McCarty, a cowboy who had been firing at people while drunk. Baca was soon faced by about eighty cowboys. He hid in Geronimo Armijo’s house as a fierce gunfight began. The attackers fired thousands of rounds at the house, but Baca was not wounded. He returned fire, killing four cowboys and wounding eight. After 36 hours, the cowboys ran out of ammunition and withdrew. McCarty was jailed for disturbing the peace and drunkenness. In May 1885, Baca was indicted for killing one of the men, but the door of Armijo’s house, covered with bullet holes, was admitted as evidence and Baca was acquitted. He later became a licensed attorney and a Deputy U.S. Marshal. On May 24, 2008, the Elfego Baca Foundation opened a memorial at 101 Main St, Reserve, New Mexico, in his honor.
