Burton United Football Club was based in Burton upon Trent, England. It was founded in 1901 when two local clubs, Burton Swifts and Burton Wanderers, merged, and they played at Peel Croft. Swifts had been in the Football League since 1892, and Wanderers had been in the League from 1894 to 1897 before joining the Midland League.

Burton United took Swifts’ place in the Football League Second Division, but they never had much success. They never finished higher than 10th and never went past the first round of the FA Cup. In 1906-07 they finished bottom and were not re-elected to the League, with Fulham taking their place.

After leaving the Football League, Burton United played in the Birmingham & District League and, from 1909, the Southern League. At the end of the 1909-10 season they finished bottom in the Birmingham & District League and second bottom in the Southern League, and they merged with Burton All Saints.

In 1924 the two clubs’ history continued as Burton Town. Burton Town stopped playing in 1940 and was merged into Burton Albion around 1950. Burton Albion later reached the second tier of English football in 2015-16.
