Frederick Smith (Somerset cricketer)
Frederick Aitken Leeston Smith (10 May 1854 – 27 January 1894) was an English cricketer who played for Somerset in 1884 and 1885. He was born in Kensington, London, and died in Parkstone, Dorset. Some sources list his name as Leeston-Smith. Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack’s 1905 obituary says he died in 1903 and that he began using the name Leeston in 1880.
Smith was educated at Malvern College and Christ’s College, Brecon. He was a right-handed batsman, able to open or bat in the middle order, and a right-arm fast bowler, though he did not bowl in first-class cricket. He played club cricket for Weston-super-Mare CC and once hit E. M. Grace (W. G. Grace’s elder brother) for four sixes in a row against Thornbury. He appeared in several matches for Somerset before the county gained first-class status in 1882; after that, he played only three first-class games, scoring useful runs. His highest first-class score was 37, in his last match against Gloucestershire in August 1885.
