Kamen Rider Black Sun is a Japanese web series reboot of the 1987 show Kamen Rider Black. Made by Toei and directed by Kazuya Shiraishi, it released worldwide on Amazon Prime Video on October 28, 2022. The series is a mature, adult‑oriented take that marks part of the Kamen Rider franchise’s 50th anniversary.

Set in 2022 Japan, the story centers on a country facing a political crisis. The government has declared that humans can coexist with Kaijin, altered humans created by a secret experiment long ago. Aoi Izumi, a human rights activist, encounters Kotaro Minami (Kamen Rider Black Sun) and Nobuhiko Akizuki (Kamen Rider Shadow Moon), former members of the Gorgom group who once worshipped the Creation King. Their opposing beliefs and goals threaten the society’s fragile balance and the future of all Kaijin.

Key cast members include Hidetoshi Nishijima as Kotaro Minami / Kamen Rider Black Sun and Tomoya Nakamura as Nobuhiko Akizuki / Kamen Rider Shadow Moon. The production emphasizes a weightier tone while aiming to be accessible to younger viewers as well. Special effects were guided by Shinji Higuchi with Kiyotaka Taguchi as special effects director.

Visuals feature redesigned equipment and bikes, such as Battle Hopper for Black Sun and Road Sector for Shadow Moon. Filming wrapped in March 2022, with the project announced in 2021 and promotional material released throughout 2022, including teasers in June and concept imagery for the title characters.
