John Upton (1639–1687) of Lupton, in the parish of Brixham, Devon, was a Member of Parliament for Dartmouth in 1679, serving from February to August.

He was the eldest son of Arthur Upton (1614–1662) of Lupton, who had been MP for Devon in 1654 and 1656 during Oliver Cromwell’s Protectorate, and his wife Elizabeth Gould (d. 1685), daughter of William Gould of Floyer Hayes and the widow of Robert Haydon of Cadhay.

John Upton married Ursula Lytcott (d. 1709). Ursula was the daughter of Sir John Lytcott of East Molesey, Surrey, and the widow of George Clerk, a London merchant. Sir John Lytcott had bought the manor of East Molesey in 1633. The Lytcott arms are shown impaled with Upton’s on John Upton’s monument in Brixham Church. Ursula’s sister Anne Lytcott was married to John Thurloe, Cromwell’s secretary to the Council of State and spymaster.

John Upton died on 7 September 1687 at Salisbury, aged 49, and was buried on 20 September 1687 in St Mary’s Church, Brixham, where his mural monument survives on the north wall of the nave.
