EVE (text editor)
EVE is a flexible text editor for the VMS operating system. It was originally called Extensible VAX Editor and later Extensible Versatile Editor. EVE uses the Text Processing Utility (TPU) to edit text. The Emacs editor can emulate EVE with an add-on.
EVE runs on VT100/VT220 terminals, so some common PC keyboard shortcuts may not work by default. You can customize keys by editing EVE$INIT.EVE in your home directory or current directory; system-wide settings can be in SYS$LOGIN:EVE$INIT.EVE. For example, default keys include:
- Ctrl-F to start a string search
- F3 to repeat the last search
- F1 to show the list of EVE commands
- F2 to open the EVE command line
On startup, EVE reads the EVE$INIT.EVE file to apply your settings.
Automatic journaling helps you recover most or all of your edits if something goes wrong.
The TWO WINDOWS (split view) feature lets you edit two files at once.
