Glenmont, New York
Glenmont is a small community in the town of Bethlehem, Albany County, New York. It sits in the northeastern part of Bethlehem and is a suburb of Albany. The Hudson River borders it to the east. Once a farming area, Glenmont now has homes, a busy shopping street along Route 9W, and industry along the riverfront.
Glenmont is part of the Bethlehem Central School District and has Glenmont Elementary School for grades K–5. The principal is Laura Heffernan.
The area has a long history dating back to The Abbey Hotel, built in the early 1700s. East of the hotel along the Hudson was a race track. The hotel stood roughly halfway between Albany and Van Wie’s Point and was an important stop for travelers moving between New York City and Albany by boat or steamship. In 1804, the Albany and Bethlehem Turnpike connected Kenwood to The Abbey. The hotel was demolished in the 1960s.
