Duns Creek, New South Wales
Duns Creek, also known as Dunns Creek, is a rural residential suburb in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It’s part of Port Stephens Council and sits near the historic village of Paterson, about 182 km north of Sydney and 52 km north-northwest of Newcastle.
Geography
The western edge borders the Paterson River, with land near the water only about 3 meters above sea level. The land rises into hills to the east, reaching elevations from about 80 to 280 meters. Homes are on large blocks, typically between 2 and 20 hectares, with some riverfront properties up to about 202 hectares. From higher parts of Duns Creek Road, you can see across the Paterson and Hunter valleys toward the Tasman Sea, roughly 30 km away. The area gets good rainfall and stays green most of the year.
Population and community
Duns Creek has a small population, roughly around 500 people in recent years. The community tends to be middle-aged on average. Most residents were born in Australia, with a mix of religions and styles of living.
History and development
The name comes from Captain William Dun, who received a land grant in 1821 after starting a dairy farm called Duninald. The farm’s homestead is a heritage item. Since the 1980s, many large rural blocks have been subdivided, attracting people moving from cities and hobby farms. In 2000, a proposal for a A$45 million tourist resort at Mahogany Ridge was put forward but was opposed and ultimately rejected in 2007. It was replaced by a smaller, upscale rural subdivision.
Transport and services
There is one Hunter Valley Buses route through Duns Creek. It’s a short drive to Maitland and about an hour to Newcastle by road. Paterson and Woodville offer shops, schools, and other facilities, including All Saints Church in Woodville. The area now has NBN internet. A daily mail service operates, and the council provides weekly garbage and recycling.
