2016 Northern Pride RLFC season
The 2016 season was the ninth for the Northern Pride Rugby League Football Club in the Intrust Super Cup. The Pride were one of 14 teams, playing 23 matches over 25 weeks from March to August (12 home games and 11 away games).
Team changes and leadership
- Five veteran players retired at the end of 2015. The Pride rebuilt with a much younger squad, averaging about 21 years old—the youngest the club had.
- New captain: Ryan Ghietti, who had played 96 QCup games and represented Italy in 2013. Jack Svendsen was vice-captain during trials, with Luke George taking the role in pre-season. A new senior leadership group also included Justin Castellaro and Tom Hancock.
- The club conducted governance changes after Bob Fowler stood down as chairman, appointing interim chairman Terry Mackenroth and restructuring to a company limited by guarantee. There were discussions about rebranding to reflect Cairns and Far North Queensland, but players and fans opposed the idea.
Season context and changes
- To boost crowds, home games were moved to Sunday afternoons at 3:00 pm. The Pride also experimented with sponsorship, offering individual player jersey sponsorships to local businesses.
- The Queensland Rugby League reduced interchanges from 10 to 8 per game.
- A High Performance Unit was created to reduce injuries, including doctors, physios, dietitians and coaches, and GPS tracking was introduced to monitor player workloads.
Location and notable games
- The Pride played some different venue games, including Round 11 at Atherton Showground and Round 20 at Ravenshoe (against Redcliffe Dolphins).
- Highlights included a commanding 48–0 win over Tweed Heads and wins against several of the top teams, but overall consistency and defense remained problems for the young squad.
On-field results
- The team finished 8th with 11 wins from 23 matches, their worst finish to date and the first time they missed finals since early years.
- After the season, coach Joe O’Callaghan resigned to take an assistant role at Wynnum-Manly. Some players moved on as contract discussions became contentious. The board also made changes, with Rod Jensen being sacked as CEO and Chey Bird appointed interim CEO.
Roster and debutants
- The Pride used 27 players during the season. Fourteen players from 2015 remained, plus ten new signings and two Cowboys allocation players (Coen Hess and Shaun Hudson) who joined for 2016. A number of players made their debuts, and several others were retained through re-signing.
- The club awarded its first life memberships mid-season in August to Tom Hancock, Col Wilkie, and Akeripa Tia-Kilifi.
Media and branding
- Channel 9 continued broadcasting Intrust Super Cup games, with Pride appearing on TV in two matches during 2016.
Bottom line
- 2016 was a year of rebuilding for the Pride: a very young squad, leadership transition, governance changes, and new performance initiatives. While there were exciting wins and strong moments, the season ended with eighth place and missing the finals, prompting changes off the field and at the coaching level.
