Charlie Mathys
Charlie Peter Mathys (June 20, 1897 – January 18, 1983) was an American football player from Green Bay, Wisconsin. He played as a quarterback, kicker, and punt returner in the early National Football League.
Mathys began his professional career with the Hammond Pros in 1920–1921, appearing in five games. He then joined the Green Bay Packers, where he played from 1922 to 1926. In 52 career games, 49 of which he started, he helped the Packers win their first game against the Chicago Bears on September 27, 1925, throwing a last‑second touchdown pass to seal a 14–10 victory. He was among the league’s highest-paid players at the time, earning about $100 per game.
Born in Green Bay, Mathys attended Green Bay West High School, excelling in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He played college football at Ripon College and Indiana University, where he earned all‑conference honors at Indiana.
After retiring in 1926, following his wife’s urging to find a more traditional job, Mathys stayed involved with football as a member of the Green Bay Packers Board of Directors. He was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 1977. Mathys passed away in Green Bay in 1983 at the age of 85. He finished his career with 102 points and 16 total touchdowns (11 passing, 4 receiving, 1 rushing) and two field goals.
