Sofia Börjesson
Sofia Börjesson, born April 28, 1964, is a Swedish professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. She holds a chair in Technology Management and studies how large, established organizations change and develop, with a focus on managing innovation and on business model innovation. She uses qualitative, collaborative research with industry partners to create practical knowledge and has published in journals such as R&D Management, Journal of Change Management, and Technovation.
She earned a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Chalmers in 1988, a Licentiate degree in 1990 with a study on working hours in a flexible manufacturing system, and a PhD in 1997 at Chalmers with a thesis on two approaches to improvement in the engineering industry.
After her PhD, she worked as Senior Researcher in the FENIX Research Programme (1997–2006), a national collaboration between Chalmers and the Stockholm School of Economics with firms like AstraZeneca, Ericsson, Telia, and Volvo Cars to bridge academia and industry. When the programme ended, she became Director of the Center for Business Innovation (CBI) at Chalmers (2007–2016).
Since 1999 she has held various managerial positions at Chalmers, including Vice Dean of the Department of Technology Management and Economics and Head of Divisions for Project Management, Innovation Management, and Innovation and R&D Management. She has extensive experience in supervising and leading research with both industry and academic partners. She currently teaches in the department’s PhD School and in the Master’s program Management and Economics of Innovation (MEI).
