Chak Sing Lau
Chak Sing Lau, also known as Wallace Lau, is a Hong Kong rheumatologist and the Dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He holds the Daniel C K Yu Professorship in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology and is a Chair Professor of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology.
Early life and education
Lau grew up in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong, with nine sisters. He attended St. Francis of Assisi's Primary School and St. Stephen's Church College. After a period in England, he studied medicine at the University of Dundee, earning MBChB in 1985 and an MD in 1993.
Career
Lau trained as a doctor in the United Kingdom and then returned to HKU as an assistant professor, rising to full professor by 2000. He served as Assistant Dean for Information Technology and Planning, then for Education and Student Affairs (2001–2007). In 2007 he became the first chair of rheumatology at the University of Dundee. He returned to HKU in 2010 as chair of rheumatology and clinical immunology and director of the Bau Institute, and he was endowed with the Daniel C K Yu Professorship in 2013. From 2013 to 2018 he was associate dean for teaching and learning, and since 2019 he has headed the Department of Medicine. He has worked as an Honorary Consultant in Medicine/Rheumatology at several public hospitals and, since 2018, as a board member of the Hospital Authority. He was Chief of Service (Medicine) at Queen Mary Hospital from 2018 until his interim dean appointment in 2022, and he serves on the Hospital Governing Committee of Grantham Hospital.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lau chaired the government’s Advisory Panel on Vaccines and, in 2022, joined the COVID-19 Expert Advisory Panel. He became interim Dean on August 1, 2022, and was officially appointed Dean on November 28, 2023. He is also a member of the Hospital Governing Committee of the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, practices at Gleneagles Hospital, and sits on the boards of the Hong Kong Genome Institute and the Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association. Since 2022 he has been an ex-officio member of the Hong Kong Election Committee’s Medical and Health Services sector, and in 2023 he was named to the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC and the 14th Beijing Municipal CPPCC for a five-year term. Lau is an avid long-distance runner and has completed many marathons, aiming for 50 in total.
