Lost in the Stars: Live at 54 Below
Lost in the Stars: Live at 54 Below is the debut album by American actress and singer Annaleigh Ashford. It was recorded live at 54 Below on several nights in 2014 and 2015 and released on November 13, 2015. The album runs about 80 minutes and is released by Broadway Records. It was produced by Annaleigh Ashford, Andy Jones, Will Van Dyke, and Derik Lee.
The collection features Will Van Dyke and the Whiskey 5, and it spans a wide range of styles—from Donna Summer disco to the haunting tunes of Kurt Weill and Stephen Sondheim, plus a sing-along of Alanis Morissette. The promotional single “One Night Only” was released on October 27, 2015.
Ashford wanted to capture an old-school live cabaret feel, focusing on storytelling through song. The project came from two live shows: the first was recorded during the Christmas season, but Ashford later toured with the show and added new material. She re-recorded these new songs from the road to make the album flow better.
The album received positive reviews in its debut week. BroadwayBox’s Josh Ferri praised it highly and dubbed Ashford “The New Queen of Disco.” Broadway.com’s Ryan McPhee called her “an honorary child of the ’70s,” praising the storytelling and the audience banter. EDGE Media Network’s Steven Bergman recommended the album and highlighted her engaging patter and a karaoke moment with “Hand in My Pocket.”
In 2016, Lost in the Stars: Live at 54 Below was nominated for two MAC Awards: Best Song (Another Time) and Best Major Recording. The credits are listed in the album’s liner notes.
