Camden, Maine
Camden, Maine is a small coastal town in Knox County with about 5,200 people as of 2020. It sits on Penobscot Bay where the Megunticook River flows into the sea, and it’s known for a harbor that blends mountains and ocean.
A long history of change
Residents began settling in the area in the late 1700s. Camden was named after Charles Pratt, the 1st Earl Camden. In the 1800s the town grew as an industrial center, with mills beside the Megunticook River and shipyards that built boats and other goods. Lime production was also important to the local economy.
From industry to summer guests
Starting in the 1880s, Camden became a famous summer destination. Wealthy visitors built grand waterfront cottages, and the town developed cultural amenities to match. A major fire in 1892 led to the construction of sturdy brick buildings, including the Camden Opera House. The windjammer sailing era began in the 1930s and helped Camden become known for its historic ships and sailing.
Culture, arts, and famous moments
Camden has a rich cultural life. The poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived nearby and gave a famous reading from Mount Battie in 1912. The town hosts the Camden International Film Festival and Bay Chamber Concerts, with theater and Shakespeare performances in the summer. Several movies were filmed here, such as Peyton Place, Carousel, and In the Bedroom. The Camden Yacht Club, founded in 1912, reflects the town’s long love of the sea.
Today’s Camden
Today Camden draws visitors for its scenic harbor, historic streets, and shops and restaurants. Winter keeps the town lively with the U.S. National Toboggan Championships at the Camden Snow Bowl on Mount Battie. The area remains a hub for arts, sailing, and outdoor recreation.
