Callophoca
Callophoca is an extinct genus of earless seals that lived in the late Miocene to early Pliocene in Belgium and along the U.S. East Coast. The only clearly recognized species in this genus is Callophoca obscura. Mesotaria ambigua is considered a synonym of Callophoca obscura. Many other bones once attributed to Callophoca are not clearly identifiable and are kept as undetermined Monachinae until more study is done. The best-supported material for Callophoca includes a few unambiguous specimens, such as the lectotype for Mesotaria ambigua and USNM 186944.
