Paper Cup (painting)
Paper Cup is a 1996 painting by Ellen Gallagher, kept at Tate Modern in London. It is a large work made by gluing 84 sheets of penmanship paper in 12 rows onto a canvas while the canvas was wet, creating a bubbled, wrinkled surface. Gallagher drew small lips with blue ink on the paper to address stereotypes of African-Americans. The painting was acquired by the Tate Modern in 2008, in partnership with the National Galleries of Scotland, with funding from The d'Offay Donation and help from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the Art Fund. In 2014, artist Chantal Joffe named Paper Cup one of her ten favorite paintings in London.
