Patrick Callaerts is a Belgian molecular biologist and a full professor at KU Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. He leads the Laboratory of Behavioral and Developmental Genetics. He earned his PhD at KU Leuven in 1992 and then did a postdoctoral stay at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel in Switzerland from 1992 to 1997. He was an assistant professor at the University of Houston in Texas, USA from 1997 to 2003 and again in 2004. His research looks at gene circuits in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster that control brain development, using these as models for human neurodevelopmental disorders, focusing on transcription factors, effector genes, and signaling pathways. As of August 1, 2025, he will be vice-rector of the Group of Biomedical Sciences.
