Calling station

Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

Calling station is a poker term for a player who almost always calls bets and rarely raises, no matter how strong their hand is.

In games with many calling stations, pots can get very big. This effect, sometimes called schooling, can push players to chase long-shot draws because the big pot makes it feel worth it, even though the odds are low.

In rebuy tournaments, calling stations are common. Players will call with marginal hands to outdraw opponents and build chips, then rebuy if they lose. Some skilled players do this too, hoping to accumulate chips or keep large pots in play during the rebuy period.

To play well against calling stations, adjust your strategy: value your strong hands and play them aggressively, and avoid betting or calling with marginal hands. Don’t bluff often; keep your play straightforward and protect your pots.
