Burli
Burli is a German-language song by the Austrian band Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung from the album Liebe, Tod & Teufel (Love, Death and Devil). It tells the story of a boy named Burli who mutates after a nuclear plant disaster described as a "Super-GAU" (the worst possible accident).
Burli develops unusual body features, including extra limbs and fingers, but becomes a piano prodigy who plays incredibly fast. He marries his mutated neighbour Amelia, who also has unusual features.
The song is controversial because some listeners felt it mocked people with disabilities and disaster victims, especially after Chernobyl. As a result, many radio stations refused to play it.
Chart performance: Burli reached number 41 in Germany on 6 June 1988 and stayed on the charts for seven weeks, and it reached number 24 in Austria on 15 June 1988, lasting four weeks.
