Short-cloaked moth (Nola cucullatella)
The short-cloaked moth is a small moth in the Nolidae family. It is found across much of Europe. In 2008, it was recorded in the Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada, likely brought there by ships.
Description
- Wingspan: 15–20 mm
- Forewings: grey or brown with dark basal areas that look like a short cloak when the moth rests
- Hindwings: uniform cream or grey
Habits
- It flies at night in June and July and is attracted to light.
Larva and food
- Larva: slightly hairy, reddish-brown with white marks along the back
- Food plants: various rosaceous plants, including apple, cotoneaster, hawthorn, pear, Prunus (plums and cherries), rowan, and whitebeam
Life cycle
- The species overwinters as a small larva.
