British Columbia Highway 17A
Highway 17A is a short, 6-kilometre (3.7 miles) expressway in Delta, British Columbia. It connects Highway 99 with Highway 17.
Starting at the Highway 17 interchange, 17A runs north as a four-lane road. About 4 km in, it meets Ladner Trunk Road in Ladner. About 2 km later, it ends at the on-ramp to Highway 99. The northern end becomes 62B Street, which turns into River Road and links South Delta to North Delta, including the Tilbury Industrial Park.
Trucks aren’t allowed on Highway 17A except for local deliveries. The newer Highway 17 expressway was built to keep trucks out of Ladner and provide a fast, traffic-light-free connection between Highway 99 and Deltaport, in anticipation of port growth.
History notes: The 17A name once belonged to a much longer route on Vancouver Island’s Saanich Peninsula, running about 27 kilometres and including Brentwood Bay and a ferry to the Saanich Inlet. It was designated Highway 17A in 1962 and lost that designation on May 15, 1998 as routes were reorganized. The Delta 17A route near Ladner has carried the designation since December 1, 2012, after changes tied to the South Fraser Perimeter Road project.
