A Ride into Morning
A Ride into Morning is a historical novel by Ann Rinaldi, part of the Great Episodes series. Told in the first person, it follows fourteen-year-old Mary Cooper during the American Revolution. After her Tory family learns she supports the Patriots, Mary moves to live with her cousin Tempe Wick and Tempe's elderly mother, Aunt Mary. Tempe is a young cousin who lives near where American soldiers have set up camp for the winter. Mary's friends—David Hamilton Morris and Jeremiah Levering—are nearby, and Mary has fallen in love with General Anthony Wayne.
The winter is very cold and a mutiny seems likely. Tempe befriends Billy Bowzar, a Patriot soldier who may lead the mutiny, and lends him her beloved white horse. Mary learns of Bowzar's plans and sees Tempe's hesitation growing. To protect Aunt Mary, the cousins put aside their quarrels and decide to keep Tempe's horse, Colonel, in the house overnight.
