Blue Bottle Coffee is a coffee roaster and retailer that started in Oakland, California, in 2002. Founded by W. James Freeman, the company focuses on third‑wave coffee and single‑origin beans, and it named itself after one of Europe’s early cafés, The Blue Bottle Coffee House.

In 2017, Nestlé bought a 68% stake, making it a major global player in coffee. The business grew from Bay Area cafés to a wider network across the United States and other countries. By 2021, Blue Bottle operated about 99 stores, with locations in California, New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, Chicago, and in Asia and beyond (including Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore).

Key growth steps include opening in San Francisco neighborhoods such as the Ferry Building and the SFMOMA rooftop, and launching its first New York location in Williamsburg in 2010. The company expanded internationally with Tokyo opening in 2015 and Seoul in 2019, followed by Hong Kong in 2020 and Shanghai in 2022. Singapore joined the network in 2024–2025, marking the brand’s first presence in Southeast Asia.

Blue Bottle has pursued sustainability efforts, such as experimenting with eliminating disposable cups in some stores in 2019, though details on the outcome weren’t widely reported.

Labor activity in recent years has included unionization efforts. In 2024–2025, some Boston and California stores sought union recognition over pay and working conditions. Four East Bay stores won union recognition in July 2025 after an NLRB election, representing a significant portion of the company’s U.S. locations. Later in 2025, there were strikes by Boston and California workers related to bargaining issues.

In 2025, reports also indicated Nestlé was considering selling Blue Bottle.
