Zhong Zhihua
Zhong Zhihua (born July 1962) is a Chinese engineer and educator. He has been the Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering since June 1, 2018. He previously served as president of Tongji University (2016–2018) and Hunan University (2005–2011). He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and has been a member of the 9th National People’s Congress and the 11th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
Early life and education: Zhong was born in Xiangyin County, Hunan, into a farming family. After the college entrance exam was resumed in 1977, he entered Hunan University in 1978 and graduated in 1982. He studied English and Swedish at Guangzhou Foreign Language College and Beijing Language and Culture University. He then studied in Sweden at Luleå University of Technology and Linköping University, where he became an assistant professor after graduating. He returned to China in 1995 and became a doctoral supervisor at Hunan University.
Career: In July 2005, Zhong became president of Hunan University and also led the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering. In December 2005 he was elected a fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In December 2010 he was named director of the Chongqing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, becoming its chairman in April 2011. On October 27, 2014, he was appointed secretary-general of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In September 2016 he became president of Tongji University, serving until July 2018, when he was succeeded by Chen Jie. He continues to play a leading role at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
