Beto (footballer, born 1982)
Beto, full name António Alberto Bastos Pimparel, born 1 May 1982 in Loures, Portugal, is a Portuguese former professional football goalkeeper. He began in Sporting CP’s youth teams and built his early career with Leixões, helping them reach the Primeira Liga. He joined Porto in 2009 as a backup and spent 2011–12 on loan at CFR Cluj in Romania. After a spell with Braga, he moved to Sevilla in January 2013, where he became the first-choice keeper and won two UEFA Europa League titles. In 2016 he returned to Sporting CP, then played for Göztepe in Turkey, later returning to Leixões and Farense, and finished with HIFK in Finland in 2022. Internationally, Beto earned 16 caps for Portugal between 2009 and 2018. He was part of Portugal’s squads for the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, and made his World Cup debut in 2014 in Brazil after Rui Patrício was injured. He captained Portugal for the first time in a 3–1 friendly win at Scotland in 2018.
