Joseph Cryan
Joseph P. Cryan is an American Democratic politician from New Jersey. He has served in the New Jersey Senate, representing the 20th Legislative District, since January 9, 2018. Before joining the Senate, Cryan was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 2002 to 2015 for the same district. He held leadership roles in the Assembly, including Majority Leader from 2010 to 2012, Deputy Majority Leader from 2006 to 2010, and Assistant Majority Leader from 2004 to 2005. He also served on the Human Services and Law and Public Safety committees and led the New Jersey Democratic State Committee from 2006 to 2010.
Cryan won his Senate seat in the 2017 election and was sworn in on January 9, 2018. In January 2021, Assembly member Jamel Holley announced a bid to challenge Cryan in the June 2021 Democratic primary, with Jason Krychiw also running. For the 2024–2025 legislative session, Cryan serves as the district’s senator, with two assembly members representing the 20th District.
Born on September 1, 1961, in East Orange, Cryan earned a BA in Business Administration from Belmont Abbey College in 1983 and lives in Union Township, New Jersey. He has deep family ties to public service, including his father, John F. Cryan, who also held public office in New Jersey.
