The 2020–21 Eastern Counties Football League was the league’s 78th season in England. It had three divisions: the Premier Division (Step 5) and Division One North and Division One South (both at Step 6). The FA announced the divisions on 21 July 2020, and clubs could appeal the allocations.

The season began in September but was suspended in December because of the COVID-19 pandemic and was eventually abandoned. Because both the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons were cancelled, promotions for the next season were decided using a points-per-game method, with some promotions handled by a subjective application process.

Season structure and notable changes
- The Premier Division kept the same 20 teams as the previous aborted season. Stowmarket Town were promoted (to a higher level) as part of the restructuring.
- Division One North had 19 teams (one fewer than the previous season due to the resignation of Felixstowe & Walton United reserves). Based on the restructuring rules, several teams moved up to the Premier Division for 2021–22: Fakenham Town, March Town United, Lakenheath and Mulbarton Wanderers.
- Division One South had 16 clubs in the division last season, with Athletic Newham, Little Oakley and White Ensign promoted to the Premier Division for 2021–22.
- Hackney Wick were briefly relocated to the Spartan South Midlands League, but that move was reversed. On 27 August 2020, Lopes Tavares announced the club’s renaming to Athletic Newham.

Division highlights (season statistics)
- Premier Division: 20 teams, 105 matches played, 350 goals scored (average 3.33 per match). Stowmarket Town were promoted.
- Division One North: 106 matches, 453 goals (average 4.27 per match). Promoted clubs: Fakenham Town, March Town United, Lakenheath, Mulbarton Wanderers.
- Division One South: 84 matches, 301 goals (average 3.58 per match). Promoted clubs: Athletic Newham, Little Oakley, White Ensign.

Promotions for 2021–22 were part of a league-wide restructuring, with some clubs moving up to higher steps or divisions based on performance across the two cancelled seasons and other applications.
