Bemarivo River
Bemarivo River is a river in northern Madagascar. Its name means “the big shallow” in Malagasy. The river flows from the central-northern highlands toward the eastern coast, draining parts of the Tsaratanana Massif and the northern Marojejy Massif before emptying into the Indian Ocean. It is about 140 kilometers long.
The river starts near Mount Biempoko at about 2,219 meters above sea level, and its mouth is on the Indian Ocean about 17 kilometers north of Sambava. It is crossed by Route Nationale 5a near Nosiarina. The Bemarivo Basin covers roughly 4,800 to 5,400 square kilometers. Near its mouth, the river’s average discharge is about 176 cubic meters per second (based on 1971–2000 data).
Its main right-bank tributaries are Androranga, Marerano, and Anjialava. The Bemarivo forms the northern edge of the Betsimisaraka region. Note: there is another Bemarivo River that is a tributary of the Sofia River; they are different rivers.
