Augustus Long
Augustus Calvin Long (Gus Long) was an American business leader born on August 23, 1904, in Starke, Florida. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1926 and served in the Navy until 1930. He began working for Texaco in 1930 as a service-station supervisor in Miami, then led operations in Ireland (1932) and the Netherlands (1934). During World War II, he was recalled to Navy duty to help coordinate petroleum supplies for the Allies.
After the war, Long rose through Texaco, becoming a director in 1950, president from 1953 to 1956, and chairman and CEO from 1956 to 1965. He later served as chairman of the executive committee and CEO from 1970 to 1971. He also sat on the boards of Freeport Sulphur, Equitable Life Assurance Society, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Long was the son of federal judge Augustus V. Long. He married Elizabeth Walsh in 1926, and they had three daughters: Elizabeth, Ellen, and Sheila. Elizabeth died in 1963. He married Doris Ann Penrose in 1964, and they had a daughter named Dorothy.
He died on November 15, 2001, in North, Virginia, at age 97 and is buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
