Askim, Sweden
Askim is a district in Gothenburg Municipality, Sweden. It is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southwest of Gothenburg’s city center. Västra Frölunda lies to the northwest, Mölndal to the east, and the sea is to the west.
Askim has its own local district council, similar to Gothenburg as a whole. The people who vote in Askim tend to have liberal, bourgeois views, while Gothenburg overall leans more toward social democracy and environmentalism. This has caused some local tensions, with some residents wanting Askim to become a separate municipality again.
Historically, Askim was a fishing village. Today it is an upper‑middle‑class area with golf clubs, yacht clubs, and large houses. The cheaper parts are popular with families because of safety and good schools. The district includes Askim itself, Hovås, Billdal, and Skintebo.
There are many ancient artifacts beneath Askim, dating back to the Stone Age. The coast of Askim is part of Kattegatt, and the land is hilly. Most buildings are private homes, and many are along the coast. People here have higher incomes than the average in Gothenburg and Sweden.
The local football team is Askims IK, founded in 1933. The coach is Pontus Kåmark, a former Sweden national team player.
