Asia is an English rock band formed in London in 1981. It started as a supergroup, bringing together four musicians from successful progressive rock bands: John Wetton (vocals and bass), Steve Howe (guitar), Geoff Downes (keyboards), and Carl Palmer (drums). Their name and early image were helped by Roger Dean’s distinctive artwork.

The group’s most famous moment came with their 1982 self-titled debut album, Asia. It was a major commercial hit, spending nine weeks at the top of the US chart and selling millions of copies worldwide. The lead single, “Heat of the Moment,” became a big hit in many countries, helped by MTV videos. The debut established Asia as a popular arena rock act, even though critics saw it as more radio-friendly than traditional progressive rock.

Asia experienced several lineup changes over the years. Wetton left in 1983, with Greg Lake briefly taking his place for a small number of concerts in Japan. The band experimented with other guitarists, including Mandy Meyer for a time, and released Astra in 1985, which was not as successful as the first two albums. The group went on hiatus in the mid-1980s.

In 1991, Asia reformed with a new singer-bassist, John Payne, while Geoff Downes remained a core member. This era produced Aqua (1992), Aria (1994), and a string of releases that reflected a lighter, more pop-oriented approach. The 1990s also saw compilations and archival material, as well as various tours with different lineups.

A major turning point came in 2006 when the original four members—Downes, Wetton, Howe, and Palmer—reunited for a world tour and new projects. They released Phoenix in 2008, Omega in 2010, and XXX in 2012, celebrating the band’s ongoing activity. Steve Howe left again in 2013, and Asia continued with a new guitarist, Sam Coulson, before bringing in others for subsequent tours and recordings. Gravitas followed in 2014.

Tragedy and later activity marked the late 2010s. John Wetton died in 2017, after which Asia continued with various lineups for tours and new material. In 2019, Asia joined Yes, John Lodge, and Carl Palmer’s ELP Legacy on The Royal Affair Tour, with Steve Howe appearing for part of the set. The 2020s saw ongoing changes, including a 2024 touring lineup featuring Geoff Downes, Virgil Donati, John Mitchell, and Harry Whitley. In 2025, the band announced a deal with Frontiers Music to release new albums, with a studio project planned for 2026.

Geoff Downes has been the longest-serving member and the only constant in Asia’s many changes. The band’s history includes a known separate period, Asia Featuring John Payne (1991–2006), which continued alongside the original Asia for some years. Asia’s story is one of enduring popularity, frequent lineup changes, and a lasting influence on rock that blends prog, AOR, and pop sounds.
