1938 United States gubernatorial elections
1938 United States gubernatorial elections were held in 33 states on November 8, with Maine voting on September 12. The Democrats started with the majority of governorships but Republicans gained several seats from them, shifting the balance toward the GOP. Minor parties won little or no governor races this year. A notable result was in New York, where Governor Herbert H. Lehman was re-elected, helped by votes on the American Labor Party line. In New York, the governor was elected to a four-year term for the first time, instead of a two-year term.
