Azerbaijan State Agricultural University
Azerbaijan State Agricultural University (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Dövlət Aqrar Universiteti) is a public university in Ganja, Azerbaijan. It has eight schools, about 6,000 students and 560 faculty members. There is also a teaching site in Gazakh with around 500 distance-learning students. The university’s history goes back to the Department of Agriculture at Baku Polytechnical Institute, founded on 14 November 1920. After the Red Army invasion and the creation of the Azerbaijan SSR, the institution in Baku evolved into the Baku Polytechnical Institute, focusing on engineering. In 1923 it became Azerbaijan Polytechnical Institute, and in 1929 it was split into three independent schools for agriculture, economics, and oil. Today, it is the only state university in Azerbaijan that offers a university‑level degree in agriculture.
The university has been led by several rectors. Former rector Memmedtaghi Jafarov served until his death, and a new rector was appointed in 2008. The current rector is Zafer Gurbanov, a former vice‑rector of Baku Higher Oil School.
The main building is at 276 Atatürk Street and was built in 1897. It once housed the Zemstvo DUMA and later became the Governor’s residence for Elizavetpol Governorate. In 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic used the building during its capital in Ganja. The ADR museum is nearby, in a building built in a traditional architectural style.
