Yahoo New Zealand
Yahoo! New Zealand is the New Zealand arm of Yahoo, offering search, news and sports content. It is based in Auckland.
From 2006 to 2011, Yahoo! New Zealand ran as Yahoo!Xtra, a joint venture between Yahoo!7 (51%) and Telecom New Zealand (49%). Telecom had previously run Xtra as NZ’s largest internet provider and had teamed up with MSN to run XtraMSN. In December 2006, the Yahoo!Xtra venture launched, replacing the old XtraMSN/Msn portals; on 1 March 2007 users were invited to YahooXtra.co.nz or MSN.co.nz.
In April 2011 Telecom sold its stake to Yahoo!7, and Yahoo!Xtra was rebranded as Yahoo! New Zealand. When the sale happened, Yahoo! Xtra staff moved to Yahoo! New Zealand. Telecom said Yahoo!7 would continue to support its broadband customers.
Yahoo! email continued for Telecom customers, but in 2013 a major spam and phishing attack led to thousands of password resets. In 2016–2017, Spark New Zealand (the rebranded Telecom) migrated Xtra Mail to spark.co.nz, in partnership with SMX.
