Appeals Selection Committee of the Supreme Court of Norway
The Appeals Selection Committee of the Supreme Court of Norway (Høyesteretts ankeutvalg) is not a separate court anymore. A case is decided either by this committee or by the Supreme Court. The committee is usually made up of three Supreme Court Justices appointed by the Chief Justice. In criminal cases appealed from the Lagmannsrett (Court of Appeals) and in civil cases where the appeal concerns less than NOK 100,000, permission from the committee is required for the case to go to the Supreme Court. The committee can reject appeals if there is no real chance of success. It is the final authority on appeals. Its rulings are published in Norsk Retstidende (Norwegian Law Reports). On January 1, 2008, with the new Civil Procedure Act (tvisteloven), its Norwegian name was changed from Høyesteretts kjæremålsutvalg to Høyesteretts ankeutvalg, reflecting the use of anke (appeal).
