Alípio Freire
Alípio Freire, full name Alípio Raimundo Viana Freire (November 4, 1945 – April 22, 2021), was a Brazilian journalist, writer and artist. Born in Salvador, he died in São Paulo at the age of 75. He was a political prisoner during Brazil's military dictatorship (1969–1974), jailed and tortured at Tiradentes prison for his anti-coup activities, especially with the Red Wing. He was granted amnesty in 2005. Freire helped found the Workers' Party and worked with the Landless Rural Workers Movement. He wrote for several alternative media outlets, including Proletarian Struggle and the Operative Unit, and later founded the magazine Sem Terra and the newspaper Brasil de Fato. He authored Estação Paraíso and Estação Liberdade and produced the documentary "1964 – A coup against Brazil." He died from complications related to COVID-19.
