During the 2004–05 season, Rotherham United played in the English Football League Championship. They struggled throughout the campaign, spending most of the season at the bottom of the table. The club was bought by the Millers 05 consortium. Manager Ronnie Moore left by mutual consent during the season. Alan Knill served as caretaker manager until 7 April, when Mick Harford took over as manager. Rotherham finished 24th and were relegated to League One. They played their home games at Millmoor. The top scorer was Butler with 6 goals. The average home league attendance was 5,577.
